Former USA Today editor says company retaliated after he claimed that only women can get pregnant

A longtime staffer for Gannett Media and USA Today revealed this week that he had been effectively forced out of the company due to his claims that only male human beings can become pregnant.

David Mastio, a former deputy editorial page editor at USA Today, said in a lengthy Twitter thread that he was “demoted for tweeting that women are the people who get pregnant,” an opinion which he claimed led to “a braying mob of my colleagues” demanding his firing. 

“For this, I was demoted from Deputy Editorial Page Editor and initially threatened with a $30,000 a year pay cut,” he said. 

Mastio has since moved on to become executive editor of Straight Arrow News, though he criticized Gannett for what he said was a purging of conservative voices from its opinion pages. 

“A journalism institution that doesn’t share the same values and priorities as its red and purple state readers isn’t long for this world,” he argued.
