Rupert Murdoch calls off engagement after two weeks
Murdoch, a 92-year-old Fox Corporation chairman and Smith, a 66 year-old former dental hygienist had planned to marry this summer, less than a year after Murdoch finalized his divorce from his fourth wife.
Fox Corporation's 92-year-old chairman, Rupert Murdoch, has called off his engagement with Ann Lesley Smith just two weeks after announcing their official nuptial plans.
The wedding would have been Murdoch's fifth. The 66-year-old Smith, a twice-married American, has a wide-ranging professional resume – from dental hygienist to journalist to volunteer prison chaplain.
The couple had planned to marry this summer, less than a year after Murdoch finalized his divorce from his fourth wife, Jerry Hall. A source close to Murdoch said the engagement was called off due the irreconcilable difference over Smith's evangelical views.
Their romance has generated headlines around the world. The two were first photographed while vacationing in Barbados. Last month, Murdoch made a public announcement of his engagement to the New York Post, one of the newspapers he owns.
"I dreaded falling in love, but I knew this would be my last," Murdoch told the Post. "It better be. I’m happy."
It's unclear whether the couple has broken up or just called off the engagement.
They met last year at Murdoch's Moraga Estate winery, in Bel Air, California.
Smith sound equally optimistic about the engagement.
“I’m a widow of 14 years.” she said. “Like Rupert, my husband was a businessman – worked for local papers, developed radio and TV stations and helped promote Univision. So I speak Rupert's language. We share the same beliefs."
Murdoch presented Smith with an Asscher-cut diamond solitaire, according to the Post.
The two got engaged on St. Patrick's Day because "I'm one-fourth Irish," Murdoch said.
The four previous wives of Murdoch are Hall, Wendi Murdoch, Anna Murdoch Mann and Patricia Booker. He has six children.
