The deaths of Oscar-winning actor Gene Hackman and wife Betsy Arakawa at their New Mexico home is now being investigated as "suspicious," authorities said Thursday.

The bodies were found Wednesday afternoon by sheriffs responding to request for a wellness check of the couple, who reportedly had not been heard from for two weeks.

The deaths of Hackman, Arakawa and their dog were "suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation" as a result of "circumstances surrounding" the scene, according to a search warrant affidavit by the Santa Fe Sheriff's Office.

Hackman's body was found on the floor in a mudroom and Arakawa's body was found on a bathroom floor near a space heater, according to ABC News.

Pills were scatted on the counter near where Arakawa's body was found and showed signs of decomposition.

While the couple's German shepherd was also found dead but two dogs were found alive – one dog near Arakawa's body and the other outside.

The Santa Fe City Fire Department did not find signs of potential carbon monoxide leak. As of now, foul play is still not suspected.

The cause of death remains unknown, but foul play is not being considered, according CNN.

Hackman, 95, starred in such films as  “Hoosiers,” “Unforgiven” and “The Firm."

He won an Oscar best actor award in 1972 for his role in the film “The French Connection" in which he played a New York cop named Popeye Doyle.

He is survived by his three children who he had with his ex-wife.
