As California first responders battle the wildfires tearing across Los Angeles, they are reportedly lacking water because fire hydrants are drying up.

“The hydrants are down,” a firefighter said on the radio, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Another firefighter said that the water supply had dropped. First responders are attempting to use planes to fly above impacted areas and dump water on the fires, but haven't been able to get up in the air.

Four wildfires raged across Los Angeles County early Wednesday morning, burning houses and forcing tens of thousands to evacuate as California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency.

The Department of Water and Power acknowledged the reports of the hydrants lacking water, but didn't have details of how many hydrants were impacted.

The department said it was working with neighborhoods “to ensure the availability of water supplies.”
