Bob Good says he will push forward on a recount of Virginia Republican primary
Good is currently trailing his opponent, state Sen. John McGuire, by roughly 370 votes in a race that the Associated Press determined on Monday is "too close to call."
Virginia GOP Rep. Bob Good told reporters on Tuesday that he will push forward with his plans to pay for a recount of the Republican primary in Virginia's fifth congressional district.
Good is currently trailing his opponent, state Sen. John McGuire, by roughly 370 votes in a race that the Associated Press determined on Monday is "too close to call." The primary was held last week, but the vote counting is still going on.
Good confirmed that he will call for the recount, and that he has the funds to pay for it. The congressman is within the threshold to request the recount, but is not within the necessary parameters to make the state pay for it. Good is trailing by just over the 0.5 percentage-point-or-less requirement, per Politico.
"We just want an accurate reflection of the intent of the voters who legitimately, and legally, participated. Everybody should want that,” Good told reporters. “We intend to pursue that. And we'll respect that when that does happen."
The congressman said he will accept the results of the recount, even if it goes to McGuire, but has questioned the integrity of the election.
The latest comments come after the Virginia Republican Party declared McGuire as the primary winner on Monday, claiming the contest in the fifth district had "concluded."
"I congratulate State Senator John McGuire on being the Republican nominee," Republican Party Chairman Rich Anderson said in a statement. "Further, I thank Congressman Bob Good for his service to the Commonwealth and country. Given the margin, Congressman Good has the right ... to request a recount of the election. As Americans, we should respect his right to do so."
If Good does demand the recount, he will need to wait until after the State Board of Elections certifies the results on July 2, Anderson said.
