Democratic congressman proposes bill to extend Secret Service security perimeter at events
The bill was introduced in the aftermath of the Trump assassination attempt to “ensure that any security perimeter is co-extensive with the firing range of firearms likely to be used in assassination attempts."
Rep. Ritchie Torres (D-N.Y.) proposed a bill on Tuesday that would require the Secret Service to extend the guarded security perimeter for events such as political rallies with protectees like former President Trump.
The legislation would expand the perimeter to at least 500 yards to consider semiautomatic weapons that could be used in an assassination attempt such as the shooting in Butler, Pa., during Trump's outdoor rally last month.
The bill would “ensure that any security perimeter is co-extensive with the firing range of firearms likely to be used in assassination attempts."
A House select committee is currently investigating the Secret Service's handling of the security measures at the rally where a gunman shot Trump, killed an attendee and injured others.
