All GOPers on House Homeland Security panel officially back Mayorkas impeachment, after 2nd hearing
The 18 GOP House members said in their statement that Mayorkas failed to fulfill his oath of office due to lack of action at the border.
All 18 GOP members of the House Committee on Homeland Security announced their support for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, following the panel's second and likely final hearing on the matter.
“After our nearly year-long investigation and subsequent impeachment proceedings, and having exhausted all other options to hold him accountable, it is unmistakably clear to all of us – and to the American people – that Congress must exercise its constitutional duty and impeach Secretary Mayorkas," the members said in a joint statement Thursday.
The committee is holding impeachment inquiry hearings on the argument Mayorkas has grossly failed in his official capacity to secure the U.S. border, which has resulted a record number of illegal immigrants entering the country.
In the second hearing, committee Chairman Mark Green argued that the secretary made it easier for illegal immigrants who commit crimes to stay in the U.S.
The Tennessee Republican also said Mayorkas’ "refusal to enforce the law, which requires him to detain and remove illegal aliens, has tragically increased crime and endangered public safety across the country."
The 18 GOP House members also said in their statement: "The Secretary has consistently willfully and systemically refused to follow the laws passed by Congress, abused his authority, and breached the trust of Congress and the American people on numerous occasions," the statement continues.
Democrats including Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin, the ranking member on the committee, argue, at least in part, that Mayorkas' actions, or lack of, do not meet the threshold of high crimes and misdemeanors for impeachment.
