Democrat Rep Nadler: 'Gender Affirming Care' hearing just platform for GOP to bully transgender kids
Former University of Pennsylvania swimmer Riley Gaines took to social media to defend Cole and Scanlan from Nadler's comments.
New York Rep. Jerry Nadler, the House Judiciary Committee's top Democrat, said the chamber's subcommittee hearing Thursday on so-called "gender-affirming care" was an excuse for the Republicans to "bully transgender kids."
"Today’s ... hearing was nothing more than a taxpayer funded platform for House Republicans to bully transgender kids, who are already some of the most vulnerable members of our community," Nadler tweeted.
The hearing by Judiciary's subcommittee on Constitution and Limited Government included testimony from those for and against so-called gender-affirming care, which is essentially medical interventions from prescribing puberty blockers to removing breasts.
Among those who testified was "detransitioner,"Chloe Cole and Paula Scanlan, a former college swimmer at the University of Pennsylvania who competed against transgender swimmer Lia Thomas.
Cole asked Congress to take a stand against children transitioning.
The hearing also included testimony from Miriam Reynolds, a mother of a transgender boy who was in favor of gender-affirming care.
"Shame on you for dismissing @PaulaYScanlan & @ChoooCole as nothing more than "Republican bullies," a former college swimmer Riley Gaines, commented on Nadler's post. "What a deplorable man.
