House task force investigating Trump shooting issues requests to DHS and Secret Service
The task force's chairman Mike Kelly, and ranking member Jason Crow, sent the six-paged letters to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe, requesting documents on the shooting by Sept. 4.
A bipartisan House task force investigating the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump sent the Department of Homeland Security and the Secret Service on Wednesday an extensive request for documents related to the rally.
The House of Representatives established a task force to investigate the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, last month. The task force consists of seven Republican and six Democratic members.
The task force's chairman Mike Kelly and ranking member Jason Crow, sent the six pages of requests to DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe, requesting the documents by Sept. 4.
The requests included information on the Secret Service’s intelligence advance process, the site selection process, and security planning for outdoor events, according to The Hill.
The task force also requested transcribed interviews from the Secret Service's investigation into the shooting, along with new transcribed interviews with the Secret Service local field office special agent in charge, the special agent in charge of Trump’s protective division, the site agent and lead advance agent for the rally, and various other officials.
“Since the attempted assassination of former President Trump, we have provided over 1,000 pages of responsive documentation to Congress and have made our employees available for interviews," Secret Service Chief of Communications Anthony Guglielmi told the outlet.
"Those efforts will continue as our desire to learn from this failure and ensure it never happens again is unwavering. We welcome any and all efforts towards that end,” he added.
A DHS spokesperson said the agency was also devoted to working with Congress to figure out what led to the shooting, and how to avoid another in the future.
The request comes after the task force visited the shooting site in Butler on Monday.
