House narrowly votes to demand Pence invoke 25th Amendment, VP declines to do it
Democrats pursue mostly symbolic vote after Pence made declaration. Next step is impeachment.
The House narrowly approved a resolution Tuesday night demanding Vice President Mike Pence invoke the Constitution’s 25th Amendment and remove President Trump from office before his term expires Jan. 20.
The vote was 223-205, mostly along party lines, and came just hours after Pence delivered a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi stating that he would not take such action.
The next step the Democrats intend to pursue Wednesday is to consider a single article of impeachment for "incitement of insurrection."
They argue that during his speech on Jan. 6 at the Ellipse on the grounds just south of the White House, Trump urged his supporters to march on the Capitol while they were in session to certify the votes of the Electoral College, and he did so in a way that directly led to the violent attacks on the Capitol, leading to destruction of property and the deaths of at least five individuals.
Trump denies he encouraged any insurrection.
