Senate Republicans are set this week to present their police reform legislation that is expected to include new restrictions on police choke holds and other measures to improve policing across the U.S. – following George Floyd’s death and in respond to urgent calls for change.

The GOP effort is being led by South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, the Senate’s only African American Republican, and set to be released Wednesday. The measure follows a broad reform package by congressional Democrats introduced last week in the House.

“I think we’re going to get to a bill that actually becomes law,” Scott said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

Efforts to end police use of the choke hold is included in the Democrats’ bill and in others measures being introduced across the country.

Floyd died May 25 after being arrested by Minneapolis police including one officer who kneeled on his neck for nearly nine minutes. His death sparked nationwide protests and demonstrations.

President Trump is set on Tuesday to make public his executive package on police reform, according to the Associated Press.
