New York Republicans in Congress on Wednesday are leading the charge to oust GOP Rep. George Santos, who represents parts of Queens and Long Island, after he was charged with an additional 10 criminal counts on Wednesday related to his campaign.
Rep. Anthony D'Esposito is leading the resolution to expel Santos from Congress. He is joined by fellow New York GOP Reps. Nick LaLota, Mike Lawler, Marcus Molinaro, Nick Langworthy and Brandon Williams as cosponsors.
Santos responded to the resolution by stating that the U.S. needs to be committed to due process and not expel him before he is found guilty.
"An expulsion of myself as a member of Congress before being found guilty from a criminal investigation will set a dangerous precedent. This will do nothing other than erase the voices of the electorate," he said.
Santos pleaded not guilty in May to 13 charges, including wire fraud and money laundering.
The 10 additional charges levied Tuesday include aggravated identity theft, credit card fraud and falsification of records.
Santos has faced numerous calls to step down, and he is reportedly discussing a potential plea deal with federal prosecutors.
