Trump talks to members of Congress about reopening, as Capitol Hill criticized for being absent
President, House and Senate members discussed tapped out Paycheck Protection Program, White House
President Trump spoke Thursday with dozens of members of Congress about reopening the U.S. as the coronavirus appears to be subsiding in the country – amid increasing pressure for Capitol Hill to take a more active role in getting through the pandemic.
The White House said the call between Trump and the 97 members included discussions on supply chains, relief for small businesses and money for the Paycheck Protection Program, which has run out of funding while Congress is in recess until early May.
The Democratic and Republican members from the House and Senate are known as the Opening Up America Again Congressional Group.
The call came on the same day that Trump spoke to governors across the country about reopening the country and before a late-afternoon White House briefing in which the president will announce his guidelines on reopening the country.
