Former NY Gov. Cuomo says Trump's hush money case should not have been brought forward
"When you have this country believing you’re ... trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem,” said Cuomo.
Former New York Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that the New York hush money case brought against former President Donald Trump should not have been brought forward.
“The attorney general’s case in New York, frankly, should have never been brought,” Cuomo said on an HBO segment with Bill Maher. “And if his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn’t running for president… I’m the former AG of New York [and] I’m telling you that case would’ve never been brought.”
Last month, Trump was found guilty on 34 counts of falsifying business records in the first degree for his reimbursement of a $130,000 payment his then-lawyer Michael Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election.
The case was brought forth by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg.
“That’s what is offensive to people, and it should be because if there’s anything left, it’s belief in the justice system,” Cuomo said, according to The Hill.
Cuomo served as New York's attorney general in 2007 before later becoming the state's governor.
During his segment with Maher, he warned Bragg about using the justice system for political purposes.
“And you want to talk about a threat to democracy: when you have this country believing you’re playing politics with the justice system and you’re trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem,” he said.
