Harvey Weinstein pleads not guilty to additional New York sexual assault charge
A new trial for the 2020 crimes is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 12 in Manhattan.
Convicted Hollywood movie mogul Harvey Weinstein on Wednesday pleaded not guilty to one count of engaging in a criminal sex act in New York, which stems from a recent indictment.
Weinstein is currently imprisoned on Rikers Island pending a retrial of his sexual assault and rape case. The movie mogul was originally convicted of third-degree rape and first-degree criminal sex act in 2020, but an appeals court overturned the conviction in April, ruling that his constitutional rights were violated in the original trial.
A new trial for the 2020 crimes is tentatively scheduled for Nov. 12 in Manhattan.
Prosecutors in the new case have requested that the additional charge be included in the retrial, which the defense has opposed, according to CNN. But official defense documents on why the charges should not be consolidated are due next week.
The plea comes after the former producer was indicted by a grand jury earlier this month, but his court appearance was delayed because of emergency medical procedures on his heart and lungs.
Weinstein, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison for the previous charges, will also serve a 16-year prison sentence in California. The disgraced Hollywood producer was convicted of two sexual assault charges and one rape charge in Los Angeles.
