Minneapolis officials agreed Friday to forbid local police from using chokeholds on suspects in the aftermath of city resident George Floyd’s death.

Municipal negotiators agreed with the state of Minnesota to institute the ban after Floyd died May 25 during an arrest by several Minneapolis police officers. In the course of that arrest, an officer kneeled on Floyd’s neck until he became unresponsive. Floyd was later declared dead at a hospital.

City police will now also be required to intervene and report any time they see an unauthorized use of force by another officer. Three other Minneapolis officers were part of Floyd's arrest while the fourth officer kneeled on Floyd’s neck for nearly nine minutes.

All four officers have been fired from the Minneapolis force over that incident, and all have been charged pursuant to it.
