Levi Strauss heir launches challenge to San Francisco Mayor London Breed
"We need to go in and rip the band aid off in many different departments," he asserted.
San Francisco Mayor London Breed officially faces a reelection challenge from Levi Strauss & Co. heir Daniel Lurie, who joins a growing field of would-be mayors seeking to depose the incumbent in 2024.
The city has achieved nationwide notoriety for its rising crime and abundant homeless presence. Lurie, in making his announcement, has vowed to bolster police presence and crack down on crime.
"I remember growing up in San Francisco and just loving every moment of it," Lurie said in an ad announcing his campaign. "What I learned watching my stepfather and my mom be part of Levi's is that you need to take care of the community. You have to be part of the solution."
"I love this city, but what we are seeing on the streets of San Francisco is not progressive," he declared. "We have too many people that have been in power for far too long doing things the same way they have always been done. We need the courage to try to do things differently."
"We need to go in and rip the band aid off in many different departments," he further asserted. "We have everything at our disposal and yet our streets are unsafe. We need to end the era of open-air drug dealing."
Breed took office in 2017. Her tenure has overseen a steady rise in crime and homelessness that has attracted nation attention and forced many businesses to question their continued operations in San Francisco.
Supervisor Ahsha Safaí has already entered the race to unseat Breed, Politico reported.
