New York City releases nuclear attack PSA: 'You've got this'

New York City on Monday released a nuclear preparedness public service announcement instructing residents on what to do in the event of a nuclear attack.

"While the likelihood of a nuclear weapon incident occurring in/near New York City is very low, it is important New Yorkers know the steps to stay safe," the NYC Emergency Management Department said in a press release.

The modern take on "Duck and Cover" comes as the world faces increased nuclear threats from Russia, Iran, and North Korea. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has had its metaphorical Doomsday Clock placed at "100 seconds to midnight" for the past two years, closer to apocalypse than ever before.

If a nuclear event occurs, New Yorkers are instructed to get inside, stay inside, and stay tuned for more information.

Residents should "get into a building" and "shut doors and windows," the video states. If possible, citizens should go to the basement, otherwise, the PSA says they should move to the middle of the building. 

According to the interactive Nukemap, if a Cuban missile crisis-era R-12 Soviet missile were released on lower Manhattan, millions would likely die and millions more would be injured across New York and New Jersey.

"New York City Emergency Management has a multitude of free resources for New Yorkers to prepare for emergencies, including no-notice events," NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zach Iscol said.

"As the threat landscape continues to evolve, it is important that New Yorkers know we are preparing for any imminent threats and are providing them with the resources they need to stay safe and informed," he stated.

Online users had many different responses to the video.

"Today in NYC, we get a PSA on how to prepare for a Nuclear Attack. Ok thank you - It should be helpful if we  survive the daily shootings, stabbings, rapes & robberies," Fox News contributor Dr. Janette Nesheiwat said.

"NYC has just released a nuclear attack PSA," Human Events Senior Editor Jack Posobiec stated. "Guess they’re worried about Biden as president too."

John Rich, co-founder of the country band Big & Rich, tweeted, "The last time I saw a video like this, I was in the 4th grade when it was Reagan vs Gorbachev. Anybody have any idea why NYC needs to get the word out about "what to do in a nuclear attack?" What the hell is going on?"
