“Now a real city!” Musk wrote on X reacting to the vote.
The SpaceX launch site near Brownsville, Texas has been approved as a new municipality named Starbase.
According to an Associated Press report citing the Cameron County Elections Department, the final vote tally was 212 in favor to 6 against.
The Wall Street Journal reported that voters who participated "had to live within the proposed town’s boundaries, where SpaceX already owns almost all of the property."
Most of the voters are Starbase workers, the outlet reported.
“Now a real city!” Musk, who first proposed making Starbase a city back in 2021, wrote on X reacting to the vote.
According to Cameron County, the county's commissioners still need to officially certify the election results before it can start operations.
