Joint Chiefs chairman says it would be 'great' if Trump ends Russia-Ukraine war quickly
“If he can get it done in 24 hours, that’d be great,” Brown said. “It stops the conflict … and then we get back to more global security.”
Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. C. Q. Brown responded favorably on Friday to former President Donald Trump's promise to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours if elected back to the Oval Office in November.
Trump claimed during the presidential debate last month that he would settle the conflict between Russia and Ukraine as the president-elect, and last year claimed he would do so within 24 hours, but did not divulge any information on how he would go about it.
Critics have been skeptical of the promise, with Russian United Nations ambassador Vassily Nebenzia claiming the war cannot be settled within one day.
Brown however told reporters at the Aspen Security Forum that it would "be great" if Trump is able to fulfill the promise without suddenly dropping support for Ukraine, Politico reported.
“If he can get it done in 24 hours, that’d be great,” Brown said. “It stops the conflict … and then we get back to more global security.”
Brown warned that a sudden end to Ukraine aid would have bad repercussions on the global stage, which would result in Russian President Vladimir Putin winning the war. It would also set a negative precedent globally.
“We have credibility that’s at stake … it’s not just the United States, but NATO, the West, if we just back away. And that opens the door for [Chinese president] Xi Jinping and others that want to do unprovoked aggression,” he said. “It’s important that we continue to provide support to Ukraine so it doesn’t go into a broader conflict as well. Hard leadership matters.”
Brown, who was appointed as the chairman of the joint chiefs by President Joe Biden, also commented on the president's mental acuity, claiming that Biden has been "engaged" every time they have spoken.
“He’s asked us, you know, asked very pointed questions, and made decisions and, I mean, I’ll just leave it at that," he added.
