California GOP state lawmakers sue to stop Democrats from advancing redistricting map

California Democrats are hoping to hold a special election on the redistricting effort in November, where California voters would be able to weigh in on the new maps.

A group of four Republican California state lawmakers sued the state on Tuesday to stop Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom and other Democrats from moving forward on their plan to redraw congressional districts next year.

The Democratic effort comes after Texas Republicans redid their Congressional maps in order to flip five House seats that are currently held by Democrats in the 2026 midterms. The move prompted Democrats in California to try and offset the possible gains, along with Democrats in other states such as Illinois and New York.

The four Republicans filed the lawsuit in the California Supreme Court in hopes of blocking the state legislature from holding a vote by the end of this week to advance the redistricting push.

"Today I joined my colleagues in filing a lawsuit challenging the rushed redistricting process," Republican state assembly member Tri Ta wrote on X. "California’s Constitution requires bills to be in print for 30 days, but that safeguard was ignored. By bypassing this provision, Sacramento has effectively shut voters out of engaging in their own legislative process."

California Democrats are hoping to hold a special election on the redistricting effort in November, where California voters would be able to weigh in on the new maps.

The state Republicans asked the California Supreme Court to weigh in on the matter by Aug. 20, stating the earliest that California Democrats should be able to act on the maps is Sept. 18.
