Transgender state lawmakers criticize Biden admin for being against gender-affirming care for minors
This letter comes shortly after the Biden administration said it doesn't support transgender surgeries for minors.
A group of state legislators who identify as transgender and nonbinary criticized the Biden administration for stating its position that it is against gender-affirming care for minors.
The legislators sent a letter to the Biden administration that was shared on the social media platform, X by Montana state Rep. Zooey Zephyr.
"Trans healthcare saves lives," Zephyr wrote. "America's trans & nonbinary legislators are calling on the Biden Administration to oppose any attempt to ban puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, & surgery for young trans people, and to follow medical best practices as set out in WPATH."
This letter comes shortly after the Biden administration said it doesn't support transgender surgeries for minors, which followed reports that officials in the administration had pushed to remove age limits for minors who want transgender surgeries.
“By stating that some forms of healthcare for transgender people should be limited solely to adults, the administration is surrendering the health care of young transgender people as something to be negotiated in the political domain, rather than something that needs to be carefully considered and decided by the medical community, by the parents of the transgender youth, and by the youth themselves,” the letter reads.
Other state legislators that signed the letter include Minnesota state Reps. Brion Curran and Leigh Finke and Michigan state Rep. Emily Dievendorf, according to The Hill.
They wrote that transgender youth need to know that the administration has their back.
