Multiple people were injured in a shooting that erupted during a large fight at an outdoor shopping area near the University of Iowa early Sunday morning.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Pedestrian Mall around 1:46 a.m. following reports of a large altercation. Police heard gunfire as they arrived at the scene, according to reports.

Videos posted on social media show dozens of individuals punching each other. 

People can also be seen running away in panic as shots were fired.

“At this time, multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals to be treated for wounds suffered in the shooting,” the police statement read.

Early reports indicated that 6 people have been hospitalized. 

An exact number has not yet been released by authorities.
