As many as 22 LA County Sheriff Deputy recruits reportedly hit by vehicle, injured, driver detained

Five of the recruits are reportedly in critical condition.

Twenty-two Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy recruits were reportedly injured Wednesday morning when hit by a vehicle while on a training run. 

"There were multiple injuries, and all victims were transported to local hospitals for further treatment," the department said on Facebook. "Currently, it is unknown the severity of their injuries."

Some of the victims were rushed to area trauma centers, including some taken by helicopter. As many as five are in critical condition, according to local TV station Fox-11.

LA County fire officials said that of the 22 recruits who were hit, 14 suffered minor injuries and four were moderately injured.

The driver of the vehicle who allegedly hit the recruits has been detained, officials said. The 22-year-old driver took a sobriety test, the results of which are unknown.

The incident occurred in the city of Whittier, about 20 minutes outside of downtown Los Angeles.
