Six victims of Colorado Springs shooting identified
A Latino family was celebrating several family-members birthdays at home when a victim's boyfriend arrived and began shooting the adults.
Authorities have identified the gunman and the six other people he fatally shot early Sunday morning at at birthday party in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
The incident occurred at the Canterbury Manufactured Home Community – a largely Latino community – after midnight on Sunday.
The gunman, who fatally shot himself after shooting and killing six other, and who yet to be identifed, the boyfriend to one of the victims.
Nubia Marquez, 28, survived the shooting and said extended family was celebrating her birthday along with her brother and mother's upcoming birthdays at her mom's mobile home, according to The Gazette.
The other victims are being identified as Melvin Perez; Joana Cruz; Nubia’s other brother, Jose Gutierrez, 21; Melvin’s wife, Mayra Perez, 32; and Mayra’s sister Sandra Ibarra and brother Jose Ibarra.
Marquez and that when she and husband Freddy left the party at 10 p.m. Saturday everyone was "calm" and "good."
No children were hurt and the shooter took his own life before police arrived on the scene.
"This is something you hope never happens in your own community, in the place that you call home," said Colorado Springs Police Chief Vince Niski. He also said the officers and investigators who responded "are all left incredibly shaken."
