Georgia football team declines White House invitation
No college football team has visited the White House since January of 2019.
The University of Georgia Bulldogs will not visit the White House after receiving an invitation to do so because of an unspecified scheduling conflict.
The Bulldogs football team won their second consecutive national championship in January of this year. The team subsequently received an invitation in May to attend a June 12 "College Athlete Day" at the presidential residence, CBS News reported.
"The University of Georgia first received on May 3 an invitation for the Bulldog football team to visit the White House on June 12. Unfortunately, the date suggested is not feasible given the student-athlete calendar and time of year," reads a statement from the athletic association. "However, we are appreciative of the invitation and look forward to other opportunities for Georgia teams moving forward."
While the association did not elaborate on the specific scheduling conflict, CBS Sports observed that the event date coincides with a traditional period of heightened training for athletic teams.
No college football team has visited the White House since January of 2019, when the Louisiana State University Tigers won the championship.
