Iconic country musician Naomi Judd died at the age of 76 on Saturday by suicide following a battle with mental illness, sources confirmed to PEOPLE.

A representative for the late matriarch of the Judd family has not responded to requests for comment.

Her daughters, Ashley and Wynonna, announced her death on Saturday, without naming a specific cause.

"We lost our beautiful mother to the disease of mental illness. We are shattered," they wrote on Instagram.

Judd was open about her mental health struggle for years.

In her 2016 book "River of Time: My Descent into Depression and How I Emerged with Hope," Judd detailed her suicidal depression.

"Nobody can understand it unless you've been there," she told PEOPLE at the time. "Think of your very worst day of your whole life – someone passed away, you lost your job, you found out you were being betrayed, that your child had a rare disease – you can take all of those at once and put them together and that's what depression feels like."
