Two horses died in 24 hours after the Belmont Stakes in Belmont Park as all Triple Crown sites faced horse deaths this racing season.
Mashnee Girl, a 5-year-old mare, was euthanized Sunday after falling and suffering a catastrophic leg injury during a race at Belmont Park in New York, The Associated Press reported.
During the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, Excursionniste suffered a severe leg injury and had to be euthanized.
Last month, another horse, Havnameltdown, was euthanized after sustaining a serious leg injury at the Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore during the Preakness Stakes.
Meanwhile, 12 horses died at Churchill Downs, the home of the Kentucky Derby, the third Triple Crown race, over two months, officials said in late May.
