Amazon announced Wednesday that it is cutting 16,000 jobs to reduce bureaucracy.

Beth Galetti, an Amazon senior vice president, said the company has "been working to strengthen our organization by reducing layers, increasing ownership and removing bureaucracy. While many teams finalized their organizational changes in October, other teams did not complete that work until now.

"The reductions we are making today will impact approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon."

She also said Amazon plans to "support" those whose jobs will be eliminated, in part, by offering most U.S-based employees 90 days to "look for a new role internally."

The company, founded in 1994 by entrepreneur Jeff Bezos, as an online marketplace for books, has grown into a multinational technology company with service lines including e-commerce, cloud computing, online advertising, digital streaming and artificial intelligence.

Amazon has been reducing its workforce since COVID-19 pandemic, and CEO Andy Jassy said in June that he intended to use artificial intelligence to replace corporate workers in the next few years, FOX 6 reported.

Amazon said in October that it was laying off 14,000 employees. These latest rounds of layoffs are Amazon’s biggest since 2023, when the company cut 27,000 jobs.
