A Texas state House panel on Saturday advanced a redrawn congressional map that could lead to the GOP picking up 5 seats. 

The Texas House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting approved a new map ahead of the 2026 election that would have an impact on lawmakers in the Dallas-Forth, Austin, Houston and Rio Grande Valley areas. 

The vote was along party lines. The map now moves to a vote before the full legislature.

Texas Democratic Party Chair Kendall Scudder said Saturday the party plans to file a lawsuit if the map gets passed. 

“Democrats must fight this Trump power grab through any means necessary, and blue states across the country should use this as a signal flare to start carving up their own states and make these authoritarian wannabe Republican lawmakers regret ever opening up this redistricting discussion in the first place,” Scudder said in a statement.
