Tulane basketball star charged in connection with fatal shooting
The college basketball start announced about 10 days after the shooting that he's entering the NBA draft
A college basketball star headed to the NBA draft was charged over the weekend with murder in connection with a fatal shooting in Georgia.
The player, Tulane University’s Teshaun Hightower, was charged Saturday in connection with an April 8 homicide in Stockbridge, Georgia.
Hightower, who last year led the Tulane Green Wave in scoring, was among six people wanted in connection with the fatal shooting of Devante Anthony Long, according to the Associated Press.
It’s unclear whether Hightower has a lawyer.
Jail records show that five of six people sought by authorities related to the fatal shooting are in custody, including Hightower’s brother, Jeffrey Hightower.
On the day of the shooting, Teshaun Hightower tweeted, “God protect my people.”
Tulane dismissed Hightower from the basketball program immediately after learning about his arrest, athletic director Troy Dannen said in a statement.
On April 18, just 10 days after Long’s death, the 22-year-old Hightower said he was entering the NBA draft pool but that he would keep open his option to return to school for his senior year of eligibility.
