NC GOP chairman says Republicans need to address abortion in a way that doesn't alienate voters
"The issue is that a lot of Republicans want to put their head in the sand," Whatley said.
North Carolina Republican Chairman Michael Whatley says that going into future elections, Republicans have to address the abortion issue in a way that appeals to voters.
"The issue is that a lot of Republicans want to put their head in the sand," Whatley said. "They don't want to talk about the issue, and I can assure you that Democrats are going to talk about abortion."
Ever since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2021, Democrats have been running on the issue of abortion access and the issue has played a role in recent Republican losses in elections.
"It's the only issue they [Democrats] have to run on," Whatley said. "So we need to make sure that we are going to talk about this in a way that doesn't scare voters and doesn't alienate voters."
He said that it's important to recognize that most voters don't support abortion up to nine months and the GOP needs to flip the script and show that Democrats are the extreme ones on the issue.
"75% of people in North Carolina and probably a similar number across the country, oppose abortion on demand through nine months," said Whatley. "And we really need to make sure that people understand that's what we're talking about. The Democratic platform is far more radical than the Republican program."
