Trump gets roaring welcome at epic Alabama-Georgia football game, flags NFL rule change
Former president uses adulation of young college football fans to take poke at Kamala Harris.
Former President Donald Trump got a roaring welcome Saturday night from young University of Alabama fans as he watched one of college football’s great rivalries, and he also took some time to weigh in on non-political issues like the NFL’s kickoff rule changes.
“Big time college football is as big as the NFL," Trump told conservative radio host and Outkick founder Clay Travis during an in-game interview. "I don't know what they're doing with the kickoff return in the NFL. And I don't want to get involved in controversy, of course, but it looks so bad.”
Trump pumped his fist into the air and soaked in the crowd’s adulation in the second quarter when the stadium announcer revealed he was in attendance in a skybox. Alabama fans chanted his name and “USA, USA, USA.”
Trump was treated to an epic game as No. 4 Alabama raced out to an early 28-0 lead before No. 2 Georgia waged a spirited second-half comeback but fell short in a 41-34 loss.
After an exhausting week of campaigning in numerous battleground states, Trump got to focus on a little fun while managing to use the adulation of young football fans to slip in a swipe at his Democrat rival, Vice President Kamala Harris.
"We're way up with young people. It's an honor. They're very smart. And she [Kamala Harris] berated them, saying that ‘they aren’t smart' and, I'll be honest, they're a lot smarter than her," he told Travis.
“There has never been energy like there is now. And I guess it's me, but it's also when they look at our country and what has happened,” he added. “Our country is going bad, and it's in a very dangerous place right now. But we love our country, and we're going to make it great again.”
