Alsobrooks earns endorsement from Washington Post in Maryland Senate primary
Alsobrooks faces Democratic Rep. David Trone for the party nomination, with the eventual winner almost certain to face former Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan.
Prince George’s County Executive on Thursday received the endorsement of the Washington Post's editorial board as she vies for the Democratic Senate nomination in Maryland.
Alsobrooks faces Democratic Rep. David Trone for the party nomination, with the eventual winner almost certain to face former Maryland GOP Gov. Larry Hogan. Incumbent Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., is not seeking reelection.
The primary contest has been particularly heated, with many high-profile Democratic leaders lending their support to the competing candidates. The Post leadership, for its part, said that Alsobrooks "possesses a down-to-earth personal perspective and ample seasoning as a public official."
The outlet further said she "would bring valuable diversity to the Senate" and "knows what it means to battle systemic injustice and to struggle economically."
"Our conversation with Ms. Alsobrooks convinced us she has mastered local and state issues — although she’ll face a learning curve about federal issues unrelated to Maryland and about foreign policy," the board wrote. "Her approach to issues gives us confidence she’ll ascend that curve rapidly."
While the outlet conceded that Trone had a "creditable" record, the Post noted it was focused largely on "relatively noncontroversial bipartisan bills addressing addiction, mental health, criminal justice reform and medical research."
Polling data has shown Trone to hold a modest lead over Alsobrooks, though both appear to trail Hogan, whose strong polling performance has rendered what might normally be an easy Democratic win a closely contested race.
