Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act this week, giving him sweeping and unprecedented emergency powers to quell nonviolent protests led by the so-called Freedom Convoy truckers who oppose the nation's COVID-19 mandates.

Under the Emergencies Act, Trudeau's government has ordered banks to freeze the accounts of those involved in the convoy and cease providing financial services where the institution suspects that an account, either personal or corporate, is being used to further the protest.

Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti appeared to suggest Wednesday that Americans may also be targeted.

"If you are a member of a pro-Trump movement who's donating," he said, "then you ought to be worried."

Canadian authorities have also begun arresting leaders of the freedom convoy, which has blockaded part of Ottawa, in an effort to end the protest.
