Cruz wants special counsel to investigate Merrick Garland

Compounding conservative frustrations is the testimony of several FBI agents alleging that the bureau demonstrated political bias at the top levels and did not properly conduct itself during political cases.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz has called for the appointment of a special counsel to investigate Attorney General Merrick Garland and his alleged weaponization of the Department of Justice as whistleblowers claim the executive agency has acted improperly in politically sensitive investigations.

Recent testimony from IRS agents assigned to the Hunter Biden investigation has suggested the DOJ worked to stifle the case against the first son and that Biden-appointed officials intervened to stop the most severe charges from being brought against him. Compounding conservative frustrations is the testimony of several FBI agents alleging that the bureau demonstrated political bias at the top levels and did not properly conduct itself during political cases.

Speaking on "The Verdict," his own weekly podcast, Cruz told co-host Ben Ferguson that "[t]he Department of Justice needs to appoint a special counsel to investigate Merrick Garland for obstruction of justice and perjury."

"At this point, the evidence that Merrick Garland personally committed multiple felonies is growing greater," he continued.

Cruz's call comes as the Republican-led House of Representatives continues its investigations into the Biden administration and its alleged weaponization of the federal government. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Sunday pointed to the IRS whistleblower allegations, suggesting they could play a key role in a "larger impeachment inquiry into Merrick Garland's weaponization of DOJ."

Former President Donald Trump on Monday declined to endorse such a proceeding, telling radio host Howie Carr that he would leave the matter of impeachment to Congress. He did, however, offer surprise at the scope of alleged misconduct in which the Garland DOJ may have engaged.

"I'm surprised at Merrick Garland. I know he's a liberal guy, but I thought that... I am so surprised that he's doing what he's doing," he said. "He's really protecting Biden and you can't really protect him at this point, it's all out in the open."
