Columbia student who participated in protests sues Trump administration over efforts to deport her
Columbia University student Yunseo Chung filed the lawsuit as the Trump administration allegedly works to deport her, after it revoked her lawful permanent resident status. Chung has been in the U.S. since she was 7 years old.
A Columbia University student on Monday sued the Trump administration over its efforts to deport her after she allegedly participated in anti-Israel protests on her college campus last year.
The university served as the epicenter of the antisemitic protests that broke out at numerous colleges across the country last year. Some of those students have either been expelled, suspended, or had their degree revoked over the display.
Columbia University student Yunseo Chung filed the lawsuit as the Trump administration allegedly works to deport her, after it revoked her lawful permanent resident status. Chung has been in the U.S. since she was 7 years old, per The Hill.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials reportedly got an administrative warrant for Chung’s arrest, after her name was mentioned in a March 5 media report.
“ICE’s shocking actions against Ms. Chung form part of a larger pattern of attempted U.S. government repression of constitutionally protected protest activity and other forms of speech," the lawsuit reads.
"The government’s repression has focused specifically on university students who speak out in solidarity with Palestinians and who are critical of the Israeli government’s ongoing military campaign in Gaza or the pro-Israeli policies of the U.S. government and other U.S. institutions," it added.
The lawsuit also alleges that the Trump administration is trying to go after her freedom of speech, and deeming her a threat to foreign policy as a way to get her out of the country.
Chung, who is in her third year at Columbia, was previously cleared by the university of any wrongdoing.
