Republican senators lead effort to protect charter schools from Biden admin regulations

Republican Sens. Ron Johnson, Wis., and Tim Scott, S.C., are leading 20 of their Republican colleagues in an effort to pass protections for charter schools against the Department of Education's regulations.
The GOP lawmakers aim to pass the Congressional Review Act, which would nullify DOE rules imposing stringent requirements on funding for the schools.
"The Biden administration’s new changes would place federal, one-size-fits-all requirements on charter schools, making it difficult — if not impossible — for many high-quality public schools to receive funding," read a press release from Johnson. "Despite substantial bipartisan backlash, the administration is moving ahead with its plans, which will strip families of education choice and give more power to bureaucrats in D.C."
Johnson and many of the other Republicans in April asking Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona to reconsider the proposals.
"Rather than overseeing and enforcing existing safeguards intended to ensure that high-quality schools are able to open or expand, the Department of Education is engaging in an aggressive attempt to dictate Federal, one-size-fits-all rules for charter schools," the lawmakers wrote at the time. "This unprecedented attempt at micromanaging a 28-year-old bipartisan program only serves to discourage charter schools from applying for these grants, effectively harming access to high quality schools for millions of students around the country."
