Colorado GOP Senate nominee Joe O'Dea says he will campaign against former President Donald Trump if he were to run for president in 2024.

“I don’t think Donald Trump should run again,” O’Dea said in an interview Sunday on CNN’s "State of the Union." “I’m going to actively campaign against Donald Trump and make sure that we’ve got four or five really great Republicans right now.”

Among those mentioned as potential 2024 GOP presidential candidates are former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

According to O'Dea, he believes such candidates will be able to be president longer than one term.

“They can run and serve for eight years,” he said. “I’m going to do my job as a U.S. senator to make sure that they have good campaigns in the primary here so we have a good selection of candidates for 2024.”

O'Dea is also critical of Trump's handling of the Jan 6., 2021, Capitol riot.

“I’ve been very vocal that I thought he should have done more to keep the violence from heading towards the Capitol," O'Dea said. "Anybody that was violent at the Capitol or tore something apart, they should be held accountable.”

According to a recent poll done by Marist, the current incumbent Colorado Democrat Sen. Michael Bennet is ahead of O'Dea by seven points.
