Former Los Angeles Dodger Steve Garvey announced Tuesday that he will run as a Republican for California's open Senate seat.

The seat was held by the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who announced before her death last month that she would not seek reelection.

Democrats have held the state's two Senate seats for the past three decades, according to Axios.

"I never played for Democrats or Republicans or independents," Garvey says in a video announcing his bid. "I played for all of you."

Three top-name Democrats are running for the seat – Reps. Barbara Lee, Adam Schiff and Katie Porter.

Garvey, who played first base for the Dodgers and San Diego Padres, from 1969 to 1987, says he'll run a "commonsense campaign," according to Axios.
