Melania Trump defends abortion rights in memoir coming out on Tuesday
“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes," she wrote
Former first lady Melania Trump in a memoir due out Tuesday expresses her support for a woman's personal right to either have a child or an abortion – a top issue for voters in the Nov. 5 presidential election in which husband Donald Trump is seeking reelection as the GOP nominee.
“It is imperative to guarantee that women have autonomy in deciding their preference of having children, based on their own convictions, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” she write in her upcoming book, according to the Guardian, which obtained a pre-release copy.
In 2022, the Supreme Court, with conservative justices appointed by Trump, ended federal law on abortions, handing the issue back to the states to individually make their own such laws.
Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris wants to back federal protections for a woman's right to an abortion as they existed under Roe v. Wade.
“Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her own body? A woman’s fundamental right of individual liberty, to her own life, grants her the authority to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes," she also writes in "Melania."
The 54-year-old mother also posted a video on X about the book in which she said: "individual freedom is a fundamental right that I safeguard.”
She also writes in the book that "restricting a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate an unwanted pregnancy is the same as denying her control over her own body. I have carried this belief with me throughout my entire adult life.”
