Just hours after Michigan Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she won't be running for president in 2028, the Democrat reversed her statement to say there's still a possibility she will. 

Whitmer on Thursday told a Fox affiliate in Detroit that she was absolutely certain that she wouldn't be among the candidates in the next presidential election. 

"There will be a robust group of people running for president, and I will not be one of them in 2028. I can tell you that," she told Fox 2 Detroit. 

Just hours after she gave that interview, Whitmer retracted the statement at an annual gathering of Michigan's civic and business leaders, Michigan Live reported. 

“I never thought I would run for governor, so I guess I should know better. Never say never," she said. 

Whitmer is nearing the end of her second term as governor, and due to term limits, she will not have a third term. 

She is among several high-profile Democratic governors considering potential 2028 presidential candidates including California's Gavin Newsom, Maryland's Wes Moore, Pennsylvania's Josh Shapiro and Illinois's JB Pritzker.
