In Virginia governor race, Youngkin, McAuliffe each report millions in fundraising in final weeks

Republican Glenn Youngkin and Democrat Terry McAuliffe are raking in significant sums of cash in the final weeks of their deadlocked Virginia gubernatorial race. 

Youngkin's campaign brought in $15.4 million during the first three weeks of October, according to a campaign finance report – including a self-loan of $3.5 million. The first-time political candidate's campaign spend $11 million during that time period and had $7.8 million cash on hand for the final week of the campaign.

On Monday, McAuliffe's campaign said it brought in $12.9 million from 85,000 individual donors. The former governor's campaign has raised $58 million over the course of the full campaign. 

With Election Day just one week away, essentially all polls show the candidates within a point or two of one another. The non-partisan Cook Political Report has labeled the race a "toss-up."

Democrats, who have held the Virginia governorship since 2014, and Republicans are watching the race closely, looking for clue about how the 2022 and 2024 elections could unfold.

Some political observers also view the race as a referendum on the first year of President Biden's term. 

Biden, who had played an on-and-off supporting role for the McAuliffe campaign, will appear Tuesday night alongside fellow Democrat McAuliffe in an attempt to excite Democratic voters ahead of the election.
