German, Dutch authorities detain four suspected Hamas members over alleged terrorism plot
Three individuals were arrested in Germany, including two Lebanese individuals and one Egyptian.
German and Dutch law enforcement on Thursday arrested four suspected members of the Gaza-based Hamas terrorist group on suspicion of planning terrorist activities against Jewish organizations amid the ongoing Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip.
Three individuals were arrested in Germany, including two Lebanese individuals and one Egyptian, CNN reported. A Dutch national was arrested in the Netherlands.
"Following the terrible attacks by Hamas on the Israeli population, attacks on Jews and Jewish institutions have also increased in our country in recent weeks," German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann said. "This is shameful and shocking. We must therefore do everything we can to ensure that Jews in our country do not have to fear for their safety again. And our security and law enforcement authorities are working flat out to achieve this."
The arrests come as Israel attracts international condemnation for its tactics in the strip, with even President Joe Biden, a vocal supporter of Jerusalem, criticizing what he deemed "indiscriminate bombing" of the densely populated region. The United Nations General Assembly this week approved a non-binding call for an immediate ceasefire in the region after the U.S. vetoed a resolution from the U.N. Security Council.
The Israel Defense Forces stormed the region in a bid to depose Hamas after its forces staged a major raid in October that saw terrorists kill more than 1,200 civilians. Amid the fighting, Hamas leaders have called for global demonstrations of support, declaring a "day of rage" in mid-October and prompting governments worldwide to tighten security in anticipation of possible terrorist activity.
