US citizen in Congo tests positive for Ebola virus
Earlier this week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 1,830 confirmed cases in the Congo, including 648 deaths.
A U.S. citizen employed by a humanitarian aid organization in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has contracted Ebola, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday.
The CDC said it is coordinating with the aid worker's employer, U.S. government agencies, Congolese health authorities and other public health partners to track close contacts and reduce the risk of more infections. The agency did not release additional information about the individual.
The announcement came as the Democratic Republic of the Congo continued to battle what African health officials have described as the continent's fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record.
Earlier this week, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention reported 1,830 confirmed cases in the Congo, including 648 deaths. The virus has also spread beyond Congo's borders, with confirmed infections reported in neighboring Uganda.
