Moderna and other companies making COVID-19 vaccines are anticipating that waning immunity will become a concern.

"This virus is not getting less infectious," Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel told Yahoo Finance this week. "As you see more and more infectious variants ... We are not done with this virus mutating."

Bancel added that hospitals could fill up in the fall with the most vulnerable to the virus.

The warning comes as more and more Americans put the pandemic behind them.

Indeed, a little over two years ago, the COVID-19 pandemic upended the lives of every American. People began wearing masks, social distancing, and changing their habits.

Now with vaccines, better treatments, and greater immunity from so many people being previously infected, society has returned to normal in many ways.
