Marjorie Taylor Greene seeks to impeach D.C. U.S. Attorney for not prosecuting criminals

Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Tuesday indicated she would introduce articles of impeachment against U.S. Attorney Matthew Graves, whose purview includes the District of Columbia, highlighting his office's prosecutions of Jan. 6 defendants and the contrast that effort presents with its tendency toward ignoring offenders whom the D.C. police arrest.

During a hearing of the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday that focused on crime in Washington, D.C., the Georgia Republican excoriated Graves over his handling of the Jan. 6 prosecutions, pointing a seemingly slow judicial process and identifying at least one example of a defendant who committed suicide while awaiting sentencing, according to The Hill.

Greene informed Graves of her intention to impeach him during the hearing, contending that he had opted against prosecuting roughly 2/3 of people whom local police had arrested, a move she determined to be "criminal."

Graves has contended that his office does indeed prosecute most violent felonies and that his office had opted against pursuing minor cases due to myriad process concerns and reservations about whether the arrests would survive judicial scrutiny.

Greene, however, asserted that his approach amounted to a politicization of his office at the expensive of political detractors and D.C. residents, saying "[t]he time for weaponizing the Department of Justice needs to come to an end. And because you refuse to prosecute real criminals that are violating all the crimes here in Washington, D.C., and you want to talk about D.C. residents — they are victims of your abuse of power."

"And because of that, I am introducing articles of impeachment on you, Mr. Graves," she continued.

Her declaration that she will move to impeach Graves comes the same day as reports that she plans to bring articles of impeachment against FBI Director Christopher Wray for allegedly creating a federal police force to target political enemies of the Biden administration.
