Michigan city commissioners lose posts after defying pride flag ban
"This Council believes in fairness, neutrality towards our residents, and the rule of law, amongst other things for this community," said Councilman Khalil Refai.
Two members of the Hamtramck, Mich., Human Relations Commission have lost their positions for flying a pride flag on city property in defiance of an official ban.
The Untied States' only Muslim-majority city, Hamtramck's city council voted in mid-June to restrict the flags flown on public property to the U.S., Michigan, and city flags, as well as a flag representing the countries from which many residents hail, and the prisoner of war flag.
Commissioners Russ Gordon and Cathy Stackpoole were removed on Tuesday for defying the ban, Fox News reported.
"This Council believes in fairness, neutrality towards our residents, and the rule of law, amongst other things for this community. We passed a resolution recently to do just that, and two of our sworn commissioners outright defied it, and did what they wanted," Councilman Khalil Refai told the outlet.
"We were elected by the people of the community to make these decisions, and they not only violated the resolution but the trust of the whole community by doing this. For this reason, Council felt the appropriate response was to remove them from their public positions of trust," he added.
