A majority of voters view illegal immigration as bad for the United States, according to a new poll.

Immigration and border security are major themes of the 2024 presidential election between former President Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump and President Biden sparred on border issues during the first presidential debate in June. Biden later dropped out of the presidential race and endorsed Harris.

"Eighty-four percent (84%) of voters say that illegal immigration is bad for the United States," read a Napolitan News Service analysis of its latest poll.

The survey included 1,000 registered voters.

"Only 12% believe it is good for our nation. Those numbers have remained broadly unchanged for decades," read the analysis.

The service also reported that 49% of respondents "cited crime and safety concerns while 26% saw it creating a burden on the economy and health care system."

The vast majority of respondents (83%) were in favor of legal immigration, demonstrating that voters make a "clear distinction between legal and illegal immigration," Napolitan News Service reported.

RMG Research president Scott Rasmussen reacted to the results, saying the numbers "reflect the fact that voters see America as both a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws" at the same time.

“Voters understand why most immigrants want to bring their families to the land of opportunity. But they are angry at the federal government for allowing and encouraging illegal immigration," he said.
