Trump doubles DeSantis in GOP primary, both beat Biden: poll
Roughly 57% of Republicans and independents believe that Trump will ultimately win the primary.
Former President Donald Trump stands far ahead of his Republican rivals in the race for the party nomination and even appears positioned to overtake President Joe Biden in a 2024 rematch.
Trump took 50% support among Republican voters, just over double the 24% for Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in the latest Harvard/Harris poll. Former Vice President Mike Pence came in third with 7%, while former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley took 5% support.
Of those four, only Trump and Haley have announced their candidacies. Should Trump drop his campaign, DeSantis stands as the party's obvious second choice, earning 45% support to nearest contender Pence's 13%.
Roughly 57% of Republicans and Independents believe that Trump will ultimately win the primary, however. Sixty percent of Democrats and independents thought Biden would claim his party's nomination.
Against the president, Trump enjoys a somewhat more modest advantage, claiming 45% support among respondents to Biden's 41%. DeSantis enjoyed a comparable lead over the president, 44% to 41%.
While the survey revealed that the public generally expects a 2020 rematch, voters remain wary of such a contest, with 60% of respondents saying Biden should not run again. Fifty-five percent said the same of Trump.
